2019 Burgundy: Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St-Denis

28 Jan 2021

Dugat-Py, Arnaud Mortet, Arlaud, Dujac F&P, Taupenot-Merme

In 2019, Gevrey-Chambertin enjoyed an especially favourable run into harvest, with a small amount of very localised late-season rain just what the vines needed to ease them into optimum ripeness. Tucked away at the back of the village against the slopes, Dugat-Py enjoys an exalted reputation, and anyone lucky enough to taste at the domaine will know it is well justified. Some of the vines here are so old the domaine lists them as TVV (tres vieilles vignes, very old vines) rather than the usual VV. At the other end of the village, Arnaud Mortet has never shied away from a challenge; in 2016 he took over management of 4 hectares of mostly very old vines from fine, stony soils in the south of the appellation. He vinifies the fruit with the same scrupulous care with which he handles his domaine fruit, and uses it to make his Ma Cuvee, a wine of finesse and elegance.

Several of our favourite growers are based at the next village down the road, Morey-St-Denis. Romain Taupenot has turned in a glorious and complex set of 2019s. Romain is a self-styled terroirist; he wants his wines to be all about their sense of place - and his domaine has some very well-located plots, even at village level. His wines reflect his learning, and his passion for fine-tuning every process and responding to the nuances of vintage. His 2019s are as tense and elegant as they are generous and compelling.

Cyprien Arlaud is an honest and transparent fellow, so when he tells you that he thinks his 2019s are the best wines he has ever made, you take notice. He's been making the wines here since 2001, and has the natural confidence of a man at the top of his game. As he sees it, in recent years he has been reaping the long term benefits of his early switch to biodynamics. Of course the phenomenal amount of work he puts in in the vineyards can't hurt either! His 2019s are poised, precise and vital, glowing with energy, and utterly delicious.

The F&P (fils et pere) label is the negociant arm of the celebrated Dujac business. They have always been strong proponents of using a large proportion of whole bunch fruit in fermentation and, as they see it, the ripe conditions of the 2019 vintage are ideally suited to the style. /NT
