2018 Bordeaux: Super Seconds week

7 Jun 2019

Montrose, Cos, Pichons, Las Cases, Ducru, Haut-Bailly, SHL, Feytit

It's been a week of big-name Bordeaux releases, with a steady stream of Super Seconds and their Graves equivalents: Leoville-Las Cases, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Pichon Lalande, Pichon Baron, Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, as well as Mission Haut-Brion and Haut-Bailly. We're low stock on most of these but there may be the odd case left. And a personal favourite of mine is the truly excellent second wine of Pichon Lalande, Reserve de la Comtesse. We also saw the intense, fine Durfort-Vinens, which was so badly hit by mildew that Gonzague Lurton has chosen to box in cases of 3.

Also this week, a favourite wine of ours and one of the best buys in Pomerol, Feytit-Clinet. It may not enjoy fancy facilities, but by focussing on reducing yields and modernizing production, Jeremy Chasseuil has transformed the estate, and it's been on a roll for some time now.

Things have fallen quiet again for the moment. We're just waiting for the first-growths and a clutch of big names on the right bank - we may see them after France's Whit Monday holiday next week. /NT
