Fine Pinot with weight and elegance
Domaine Denis Berthaut is the first Fixin-based grower we have represented. The village lies in the far north of the Cote d'Or - shrouded in fog all the time we were there in November. There are only a handful of growers based in this small, sleepy village of around 750 souls and fewer than 100 hectares of vines. It does have a lovely old church, a splendid and unexpected 19th century washhouse and a large high school and that is about it. Denis Berthaut handed over control of his domaine to daughter Amelie in 2013 and the improvement in quality is significant. This is a young grower going places, whose 2014s are super and prices very reasonable. One to follow, not just watch.
Gevrey and Morey are the two villages that I think of as the engine room of the Cote de Nuits. For Allen (Burghound) Meadows, Gevrey is marginally the best village of the Cote de Nuits. That textbook growing season with a turnround in the last few weeks has given the wines delicious freshness as well as weight and density of fruit. If you were at our very successful tasting last Thursday you will have encountered some amazing reds from both these villages - wines that represent this fabulous vintage very well. Morey-St-Denis has what must be one of the most consistent sets of producers in the whole region and a collection of some of the most interesting terroirs, yet is often and undeservedly overlooked. A vintage like 2014 with its cool character and perfect balance shows it off to perfection. The spicy fruit and freshness are beautifully rendered and underpinned by the fine tannins. /CW
