2011 Zind Humbrecht tasting & pre-shipment offer

Horse mowing a Zind Humbrecht vineyardTasting next Wednesday at our Bishopsgate shop tutored by Olivier Humbrecht

Zind Humbrecht's prices in the excellent but tiny vintage of 2010 unfortunately had to rise. 2011 produced a large crop in Alsace in what is a good to very good vintage. In recognition of this Olivier has implemented some fairly dramatic price reductions. And you don't see that very often. Somehow oil companies spring to mind.

Bud break and flowering were both early and this precocity continued throughout the growing season as the earliest harvest on record at the estate began at the beginning of September and took only a month. There are lots of indice 1 & 2 wines - in other words dry - and the balance between the acidity and fruit makes them approachable now, though they will age very successfully.

The trouble with the really knowledgeable is that they have thought through the angles others never consider. That means taking conventional wisdom and turning it upside down, which many modern, rational citizens find tough. For instance, got a big vintage on your hands in a warm year? How are you going to get vines to ripen all that fruit? Obvious, keep the canopy under strict control and do a green harvest. Wrong, in the sincerely humble opinion of our guest Olivier Humbrecht. In fact all these things promote vine growth and inhibit ripening. Learn from the master how to use knitting and herbal teas to curb the vine and harvest ripe, tasty and fresh fruit without too much alcohol. /CW
