2025 La Gaffeliere (St-Emilion)
Secondary Description
65% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc
Nestled into what Sales Director Thomas Soubes calls a ‘golden triangle’ of vines between the hills topped by Ausone and Pavie, historical estate La Gaffelière occupies some high-grade St-Emilion terroir. The vines span three sections: the limestone plateau next to Ausone, over the cusp of the slope on limestone-embedded clay, and at the bottom of the slope where the black sandy soils need careful management, but also bring very fine aromatics. You can in any case barely see the vines for the profusion of flowers and grasses between the rows. Cover crops help prevent soil erosion, and bring biodiversity to the vineyard. A long-term programme of vineyard replanting has seen the percentage of Cabernet Franc return to where it was in the first half of the 20th century, and it brings an extra dimension of freshness to the wine. The 2025 here is aromatically gorgeous, dense and compact, but also lifted and driven. It is an elegant and high-wire achievement. (NT 14/05/26)

Antonio Galloni
The 2025 La Gaffeliere soars out of the glass with magnificent intensity. Strong Cabernet Franc overtones and bright saline notes from the clay-limestone plateau are finely sketched with tremendous precision. The 2025 bristles with tension from start to finish. It`s a phenomenal wine by any measure. Tasted two times. 97-99 points

The 2025 La Gaffeliere undergoes malo in barrel and matures in 50% new oak barrels and the remainder in one-year oak, 12% in demi-muids and 4% amphorae. It continues a strong run of form for this rejuvenated Saint-Emilion, with quite ebullient raspberry and wild strawberry scents, a dash of black pepper and brown spices, the Cabernet Franc shaping the aromatics and giving it a Pomerol-like personality. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, impressive weight, quite peppery and tensile; this maintains density and grip through to the long finish. This is a great wine that has great personality and charm. 95-97 points

Thoroughly enjoyable, iris, juicy bilberry, loganberry, blackcurrant, rich, juicy and measured, has the fingerprint of limestone without being sharp. Clearly will age well, already totally delicious. 3.42 pH. Harvest September 12 to 22. 50% new oak. 96 points
