This Savigny vineyard Aux Fournaux sits on the Pernand border. ‘Fournaux’ evokes the charcoal ovens that were once sited here (and of which remains can still be seen). The higher section lies on thinner soils, and is premier cru, while the lower section, on deeper, more water-retentive soils, is classed as village. The Rapet vines are mostly over 50 years old, though there is a smattering of younger vines, and all their vines are within the premier cru section of the vineyard. Cherry and strawberry fruit, and the tang of salty acidity comes with soft tannins. There is also a touch of spice, and a nice savoury character on the finish which (I think) comes from a percentage of whole bunch fermentation. Very nice, very moreish, and will age well. A similar brisk ruby, rather more angular on the nose, being almost straight on the rock, yet with concentration. This shows all the more on the palate and the tannins are much more integrated. Clearly more precision at the finish. 89-92 points
