The first known reference to this lieu-dit (now premier cru) dates back to the 13th century. The name probably derives from the ‘middling’ mid-slope site of the vineyard; it’s east-facing, so it captures the morning sun. The soils here are thin and stony. It was aromatically closed at the time of Uncorked’s visit, but the texture is fabulous. Tannins are present, but velvety, and there is an evident depth across the mid-palate. It’s very structural, and leaves behind an impression of power and minerality. (NT 11/12/24)

An even mid purple. Stricter on the nose, firmer tannins in the middle, but a wealth of dark red fruit as well, more on the austere side but with excellent persistence. 91-94 points

The 2023 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru is aged in 15% new oak. It has a cohesive bouquet with raspberry, wild strawberry and crushed iris flower scents. It gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red and black fruit. Quite compact on the mid-palate, it offers orange rind and sour cherries on the finish. Drink this over the next 15 years. 91-93 points
