2023 Henri Gouges Nuits-St-Georges St-Georges

Secondary Description
Premier Cru
From the ‘undeclared grand cru of Nuits-St-Georges’. In fact, a dossier has been presented to the appellation authorities requesting the elevation of Les St-Georges to grand cru status, and in due course that may yet come to be. Les St-Georges lies mid-slope on the border between Premeaux and Nuits, on brown clay soils saturated with limestone scree pebbles (which aid drainage). It is usually perceived as the richest, fullest of the Nuits premier crus, and the 2023 shows succulent cherry and plum notes, fine structure, good acidity and a certain minerality on the finish. If it seems understated at first, that perhaps because this is so well-balanced, it does not put a foot wrong. Very fine. (NT 17/12/24)

The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru is a little smudged and overripe compared to other cuvees. The palate is quite smooth and sensual on the entry. It`s slightly lactic in style - its richness is countered by acidity. To be honest, I prefer the previous vintage to this. 89-91 points

Still a fair length of barrel elevage to come. Dense crimson colour, plenty of oak but a massive fruit weight to match. So different from Vaucrains, vastly more depth and energy though I still crave for the finesse of Vaucrains. This is more evidently immediately satisfying, and has the classic heart of this part of the Côte. 5* 95-97 points
