2023 DeMorgenzon Reserve Chenin Blanc

Media Reviews

Neal Martin

The 2023 Chenin Blanc Reserve comes from vines planted in 1972 and matured in 15% new French oak, 20% going through malo. This has a slightly reductive nose that just blurs the edges and varietal expression at the moment. The palate is fresh, with a keen line of acidity. Commendable weight, but what I really like here is the texture and umami sensation, a delicate hint of white pepper mixed with lemon thyme on the finish. Enjoy over the next decade. 91 points

Made with grapes from different blocks, although the core of the wine comes from a parcel planted in 1972, this is an assertively wooded, still youthful expression of Chenin Blanc, with top notes of vanilla and cinnamon, flavours of pear, banana and waxed lemons and a focused, energetic finish. 93 points

The DeMorgenzon 2023 Stellenbosch Reserve Chenin Blanc offers a luminous and bright personality with pretty aromas of lemon curd, honey and Golden Delicious apple. This wine has a medium-plus body that evenly covers the palate. There are mineral highlights that give it definition and sharpness. With time, an aroma that reminds me of salted toasted almonds emerges quite beautifully. These vines were planted in 1972 on south-facing slopes with decomposed granite. The wine ages on the lees for 10.5 months in 300-liter barrels, with 25% new oak, and small parts in concrete egg and amphorae. Some 16,100 bottles were released. 93 points
