59% Merlot/23% Cabernet Franc/18% Cabernet Sauvignon. A bit more Cabernet than usual in the blend here. The Cheval Blanc team noted that they are using fewer barrels and mroe foudres for raising this wine. The 2021 has a beautifully fresh, very Cabernet-driven character. Perfumed plum and cassis notes, with sweet spice showing on the finish. (NT 24/05/22)

Representing 13% of the estate`s production (a further 18% was sold off in bulk), the 2021 Le Petit Cheval exhibits aromas of cherries, sweet berries, loamy soil, tobacco leaf and spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and nicely concentrated, with powdery tannins and a saline finish, it`s a blend of 60% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc. 89-91 points

The 2021 Quinault L`Enclos is exquisite, but is the kind of wine that needs a bit of time to be understood. Incisive, soaring Cabernet aromatics are quite vivid. Hints of rose petal, mint and dried savory herbs lead into a core of dark red fruit. Beautifully persistent, the 2021 is wild, even a bit exotic perhaps, but certainly long on personality. Challenging conditions reduced the crop by nearly 50%. 91-93 points

Here the warmer soils at Quinault, which can be hard to handle in hot years, helped encourage ripeness. This has a bright clarity to the fruit, waves of graphite, raspberry, loganberry, reserved but juicy in character, and very much in keeping with the new style of Quinault. 50% new oak (500l casks), and then the rest up to 5 years old so neutral oak impact. Long slow harvest, cool maturation, a very different kind of vintage. 20hl/h yield working in 100% organic. 92 points
