2020 Newton Johnson Albarino (Hemel-en-Aarde)
Secondary Description
The saga of importing Albarino vines to South Africa was long and troubled, but what ultimately drove Dave Newton Johnson on was his desire to have a wine to drink with the Cape seafood - and the affinities he saw between the Cape and the Spanish Atlantic seaboard. This is a delicious wine packed with lemon and lime, but more than that, it is a wine of intense texture: crisp, with a leesy tang and a lick of salt on the finish. I cannot imagine a better companion to some grilled octopus or a skewer of fat prawns. (NT 21/06/21)

Now up to 10,000 bottles, with more grapes in the ground, this textbook Albariño gets better with every vintage as the vines get older. Concrete egg and barrel fermentation, as well as some skin contact, add extra complexity to this rich, floral, salty, lime-scented white. Drink 2019-23. 93 points
