Full bottle 1,230 g. 20-year-old, ungrafted vines in a vineyard in Fragata, on the free-draining slopes of Mount Ainos. Mount Ainos is situated in the southern half of Cephalonia and is the highest mountain on the island. The vines are planted at 600 m above sea level. At this elevation, there is considerable diurnal temperature variation; the hot, dry summer days give way to cool evenings. The climate is Mediterranean, influenced by the surrounding sea, which has a moderating effect on the hot and dry summer, resulting in naturally fresh wines. The vines thrive in poor rocky limestone soils. The grapes underwent a cold pre-fermentation maceration for 8–10 hours to extract aromas and flavours. Only the free-run juice was selected for this premium cuvée, which was fermented with ambient yeasts at controlled temperatures in stainless-steel tanks. Matured in stainless-steel tanks for a month on its fine lees with periodic stirring. Gently filtered prior to bottling. RS 2.5 g/l. This smells richer, deeper and more complex than the R Robola. There are still those citrus and herbal notes, but also a marked creamy lees aroma and the zestiness of grapefruit. Even with all this citrus, there’s also a more exotic character which I didn’t expect at such modest alcohol. On the palate, the acidity is marked but balanced by all that richness of fruit. Deep and intense with a mouth-watering mineral and juicy aftertaste. Great to see so much depth and power in an unoaked wine with just 12% alcohol. Very persistent. 17 points
