Knitted down and concentrated cassis and bilberry fruits, it needs time to allow the juice to flow in through the fairly firm tannic frame. This has potential for impressive medium-term drinking, just a tiny bit thrown by some bitter-edged tannins on the close of play. Consistent value and quality at this estate owned by Philippe Castéja of Batailley. 90 points

The 2019 Monpelou has an outgoing bouquet with blackberry, mulberry and light sous-bois scents, just a touch of wet sand in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, simple red berry fruit, though it feels rather subdued on the finish. 85-87 points
