Growers from Piedmont have been flocking to the volcanic slopes of Etna in the last few years. Compared to the intricately mapped vineyards of Piedmont, Etna offers a vast wealth of opportunities and undiscovered terroirs. Angelo Gaja has now taken the plunge, teaming up with Alberto Graci and making the most of Graci’s local knowledge. This is the first vintage of the white and it is a classic Etna Bianco. All Carricante, it has a lovely balance of texture and minerality, flowers, herbs and a touch of white peach. This might be understated but everything is judged perfectly and it disappears all too quickly. (EE 26/11/2020)

What stands out most in the Idda 2019 Sicilia Bianco is the authentically Sicilian nature of its joyous bouquet. This Carricante-based white opens to cedar, citrus, orange peel and cherries like the kind you would find in a sfincia di San Giuseppe with fried dough, ricotta and candied Sicilian fruit. The fruit is never heavy, offering elegant aromatic intensity instead, followed by pistachio and maybe a hint of wild fennel. The wine`s volcanic identity is fully on display with ashy and salty mineral overtones. The 2019 vintage is identified by its creamy texture, length and more substantial fruit weight. 91 points
