2018 Michel Lafarge Cote de Beaune-Villages

Media Reviews

Jasper Morris MW

Deepish red colour, actually this seems a bit less ripe than the Bourgogne, with more acidity and a few tannins on the palate. Still a good length of bright red fruit. 86-89 points

Neal Martin

The 2018 Côte de Beaune Village has a very perfumed, floral bouquet, a mixture of blueberry and wild strawberry fruit, and quite high-toned compared to Lafarge’s other cuvées this vintage. The palate is endowed with surprising weight in the mouth and gentle grip, leading to a lightly spiced, quite peppery and persistent finish. Very fine.

John Gilman

The Côte de Beaune-Villages bottling from the Lafarge family hails from a parcel of vines in the lieu â dit of En Gargouillot in Meursault that lie just below the Dessous section of Volnay `Santenots` on the slope. The 2018 version is very pretty and quite red fruity this year, wafting from the glass in a blend of strawberries, cherries, raw cocoa, a lovely base of soil, woodsmoke and a dollop of fresh thyme in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very elegant in profile, with a good core, beautiful transparency and just a touch of tannin perking up the long and complex finish. This is a classic middleweight that is destined to put on weight with bottle age and will be utterly charming when it is ready to drink. Drink 2023-2040+. 90 points

Could be called Meursault. One parcel in Meursault next to the lower part of Santenots – En Gargouillot. Barrel sample. Not as sweet fruited as the Bourgogne on the nose. A hint of herbs, spice and more sour than sweet cherry on the nose. The tannins firmer and drier and all tied up in the fruit. Tight, chalky but scented. 16.5 points
