The Liberator episode 37
Starting in the 1930s, successive generations of the Nel family have produced brandy, sweet wines and raisins on their farm near Calitzdorp (middle of nowhere, nearest town of any significance is George on the south coast). The current generation is Margaux Nel, who crafted this wine from Muscat vines planted in the early 1980s by her grandfather, Danie. After a short maceration and wild-yeast fermentation, the wine is fortified to 15.5% abv, retaining around 250g/l of residual sugar. Zesty and delicious, and incredibly more-ish, with floral characters typical of Muscat, and a lovely texture from a hint of skin-contact. This 2018 will, however, be the final vintage - the vines are victims of the drought, after the clay soils, compacted as hard as concrete by years without water, fractured and shattered their deep roots. Fortunately, in addition to drinking beautifully right now, this wine will last even longer than the vines did - drink 2023-2063. (JH 09/03/2023)
