2018 Bernard Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet

20% new oak. Glorious fruit, lemon, peach and apricot, with a dusting of white pepper and a bit of tannic grip on the saline finish. This is domaine’s largest production; ‘more parcels means more complexity’, says Alex Moreau. The plots closest to Puligny bring freshness, those below Les Champs Gains contribute most structure. This bottling is always a personal favourite; the depth of flavour and potential to age is immediately apparent. It may have been a hot year, but no sense of heat at all in this vibrant, fresh wine. This is a few months behind where it would normally be and will not be bottled before late January. Pale lemon colour with a really classy chiselled bouquet and a superb wealth of predominantly white fruit right across the palate to a clean cut finish. This is brilliant wine and seems fully concentrated. And what’s more he has 100 barrels of this. 91-94 points

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Village had been blended in July and fined three weeks prior to my visit. It has a delightful bouquet of orange blossom, tinned peach and touches of wild mint, quite intense for a Village Cru. The palate is taut, fresh and spicy on the entry, with touches of white pepper and fennel infusing the citrus fruit. An almost clinical saline finish lingers in the mouth. Superb. 90-92 points

There are fully 125 barrels of the 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Village, a lovely wine in the making that reveals aromas of warm bread, citrus oil, fresh peach and dried white flowers. On the palate, it`s medium to full-bodied, satiny and nicely concentrated, with fine cut and a well-defined finish. That there`s so much volume this year is great news for Moreau fans. 89-91 points

Smoky and spicy but super-ripe fruit character. Lemon and orange, almost but not quite tropical. Chewy, deep and full of fruit but no lack of freshness, generous fruit rather than piercing precision, balanced by sufficient freshness. 16.5 points
