Neal Martin

The 2017 Fonroque has a perfumed bouquet with redcurrant and crushed strawberry fruit, a touch of vanilla and a faint touch of cedar and dark chocolate. It opens nicely with aeration but never gets carried away (as Alain Moueix’s wines tend not to!) The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, fresh and tender in the mouth with quite a long, silky finish. Delightful! 90-92 points

Jane Anson

This biodynamically certified estate is under new ownership, but Alain Moueix remains as director. The fresh, floral red fruits don`t feel overly ripe, and yet it seems to work because they have bounce and definition - even if there is a tiny dip through the mid-palate. It`s attractive and well-handled, with just 30% new oak and 70% one year or older. 42% of the crop was touched by frost, which has affected the usual blend slightly. 89 points

Julia Harding

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Deepish crimson. Sweetly ripe Merlot fruit and some oak sweetness on the nose. The oak is a little dominant on the palate and the tannins are surprisingly supple already. Something slightly hard on the finish. 15.5 points

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Fonroque offers up beautiful red and black currant preserves notes with notions of spice cake and potpourri. Medium-bodied with a firm, chewy frame and a breeze of freshness, it finishes on a peppery note. 87-89 points
