The town of Chinon finds itself at the confluence of the Loire and Vienne Rivers, with vineyards on the gravel slopes of the area growing some brilliant Cabernet Franc. Le Logis de la Bouchardiere have been around since the 1850s, and have some very old vinestock producing very high quality fruit, albeit in low yields. 2017 was also a particularly successful vintage locally, and it shows in the quality of the redcurrant and cherry fruit this wine opens with. The smoky, earthier Cabernet Franc character is somewhat hidden behind this fruit to begin with, but emerges given time and air. Do not overlook this cheap gem. (NT 30/10/18)
