2014 Donnhoff Riesling QbA (fruity style)

The 2014 Estate Riesling QbA had just been bottled a week before my visit, but was showing very well indeed. All this fruit hails from the Keiselberg vineyard, which according to Herr Dönnhoff lies right in the middle of the transition of the volcanic soils found in Schlossböckelheim and the slate of Oberhäusen and Niederhäusen, so it is a mix of slate, gravel and volcanic soils. The 2014 version comes in at ten percent alcohol and thirty grams per liter of residual sugar and offers up a really vibrant bouquet of apple, white cherries, a touch of wild yeasts, smoky overtones, spring flowers and a nice base of complex soil tones. On the palate the wine is medium-full, bright and juicy, with a good core, just a touch of sweetness, bright acids and fine focus and grip on the long, bouncy and vibrant finish. Good everyday juice. Dominated as usual by fruit from the Kieselberg, this leads with a nice hint of floral perfume as well as an intimation intimation of the apple that subsequently dominates the juicy, polished, delightfully delicate palate. Sweetness is impeccably integrated (even though there are 30 grams of residual sugar) and supports the fruit through an understated but sustained and refreshing finish. 88 points

Dönnhoff`s 2014 Riesling is lean, straight, piquant and mineral, and the sweetness of 25 grams per liter is just underlining the fruity character. Ten percent alcohol makes this an extremely quaffable wine. Nice grip in the finish. 87 points
