Not many still extant wine estates have been making wine continuously since 1682, but Rustenberg has been around for a long time. A German by the name of Roelef Pasman from the Rhine spotted the potential of the land at the foot of the great Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, and planted the first vines. Nowadays Stellenbosch is South Africa`s premier wine region, and Rustenberg is owned and run by the Barlow family, who renewed and restored the estate when they took over in the 1940s. Their Chardonnay is one of their staple wines, and a staple of the Uncorked range. If you like a healthy lick of oak in your Chardonnay, the Rustenberg is for you. (NT 04/09/15)

The 2013 Stellenbosch Chardonnay includes 80% from the estate and the remainder from the local vicinity, hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, wild fermented and going through full malolactic in barrel without racking for 12 months. It has an understated nose at first with fresh green apple and fresh mango notes coming through. The palate is clean and vibrant with grapefruit, watermelon and apricot notes with a slight waxiness coming through on the finish. This is just a delicious South African Chardonnay. 90 points
