Il Macchione used to have a dollop of Merlot, but is now 100% Prugnolo Gentile, the Montepulciano clone of Sangiovese, and is all the better for it. (Not to mention the labour-intensive biodynamic practices now in place here.) Vino Nobile di Montepulciano sits between its Tuscan neighbours Chianti (less weighty, more mineral) and Brunello (heavier, more extracted). Classically Italian cherry fruit with a touch of musk.
