Bourbon hogshead no. 5
This delicate, complex, layered Speyside takes me right back to the first bottle of whisky I bought for myself, living abroad and a little homesick. (Mature spirit was cheaper 25 years ago than it is now!) The bouquet is riveting in its complexity, full of orange, seawater breakers, fudge, lavender, cedar, musk, oiled timber – a true meditation malt. At the confluence of the Spey and Fiddich rivers, Craigellachie (and its neighbour Macallan) sit at the beating heart of Speyside. Like many distilleries, Craigellachie is a product of the 19th century whisky boom, but unlike many it survived the ensuing bust. (NT 01/04/21)
