Bourbon cask
The name Macallan comes from a church (now a ruin) on a cliff overlooking the River Spey. Whisky has been made on the hillside below since the 1700s, but Macallan was founded as a legal concern in 1824. Since then, it has grown to become one of Scotland`s largest distilleries, proving that size is no impediment to quality. Most commercial bottlings of Macallan are labelled sherry cask, so it is salutary to see how good a bourbon cask can be. This bottling has all the depth of age, rich, deep, complex, orangey and very, very fine. A king among malts. One to sip slowly and savour. (NT 19/11/15)
