Think you know Spain?
Think you know Spanish wines? Think again! The wine scene in this country is changing at phenomenal speed. Twenty years ago Spanish wine was all about either modernist or mass market Rioja, and international grape varieties. Now, Spain is a country both experimenting with the new, and happily rediscovering its winemaking heritage and indigenous grape varieties.
We’ll be tasting through some of the highlights of the contemporary Spanish scene as it both nods to the traditional and unleashes the young Turks. In whites, we’ll try the most Puligny-like bottle of Godello you’ll ever find, and an irresistible, rich Verdejo. We’ll also touch on some modern expressions of classic styles from both the Basque region and the deep south.
In reds, we’ll visit winemakers from Mallorca and Tenerife discovering their islands’ rich winemaking heritage. We’ll touch on the rediscovery of Priorat, and contrast Alvaro Palacios’ Terrasses with another entirely different expression of the Garnacha grape variety from the Gredos Mountains west of Madrid. We’ll also explore the cutting edge of winemaking in Rioja, with two examples of very artisan producers who strive to foreground the quality of their fruit and vineyards.
It gets worse. Think you know cava? We’ll try one that has spent 11 (yes, 11) years on its lees. And in the spirit of all the colours, we’ll try an orange Rioja, Viura that has been vinified with extended skin contact, the most purely-styled orange wine you are ever likely to come across.
