For our last free tasting of the year, we're delighted to welcome James Gerrans, winemaker at Hundred Hills, to talk through and pour their range of superlative sparkling wines from Oxfordshire. In 2009, Stephen and Fiona Duckett set out to plant an English vineyard with the very best terroir possible. With over 100 samples sent off to Champagne for analysis, it was their current site which resulted in the question – 'where specifically in the Cotes des Blancs is this from'? With only limited quantities of vintage wine produced, the Ducketts are focussed on producing the very best wines from their 17Ha estate. Sitting atop a chalk band which runs 160m deep in a steep valley, the vineyard benefits from extremely long hang times producing perfectly ripe grapes. Stephen has opted for exclusively Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in his vineyard, relying on different clones to express the intricacies of their remarkable terroir. Their wines are hard to find, selling mostly to trusted independents (such as us!) or top restaurants.
