The third century Roman saint Valentine can never have imagined that his name would one day be synonymous with love, or that a feast day named in his honour would be a day to celebrate romanticism. He probably didn't even have much notice of his martyrdom; having held to his faith as only true believers can, he suffered a Rasputin-like end from multiple causes of death.
