Meet Anthony and Olive Hamilton Russell in the shop, 12-1:30pm today
The City is a familiar place for South African Anthony Hamilton Russell. Born and bred in the Western Cape, he became increasingly frustrated with the oppression of ongoing apartheid in the 1980s and travelled to the UK where he pursued an MBA, followed by a career in management consulting. After a good stint in the cut and thrust of City life, Anthony decided to return to the family estate and catch a slice of the good life in Hemel-en-Aarde (literally 'heaven on Earth'). In 1991 he took over from his father Tim, himself a pioneer for winemaking in the region, and has been focussing on making excellent Chardonnay and Pinot Noir ever since. Their vineyards are located within two miles of the coast, in a cool climate area that Tim Hamilton Russell initially marked out as ideal vine growing terrain. Working with winemaker Emul Ross and viticulturalist Johan Montgomery, Anthony and his wife Olive have finely tuned every aspect of their craft and produce wines of exceptional quality, elegance and intensity.
