Free Friday tasting - Bruna Grimaldi Barolo

Friday, 8 March 2019 - 12:00pm to 6:30pm

The generation game

On tasting from noon today in the Bishopsgate shop

You could be forgiven for thinking we already represent more than enough Barolo estates but cold hard logic shouldn't always rule when it comes to Nebbiolo. We visited Bruna Grimaldi on our last trip to Piedmont, tucked away in the oft overlooked Grinzane Cavour in the northern end of Barolo. A family-run estate founded in the 1950s, each successive generation has taken the estate a step forward. Giacomo started the estate selling grapes. His son Giovanni sold wine in bulk but things really started to develop when Bruna took over and started bottling the wines. She bought vineyards and built a new winery, bringing a new level of skill and determination.

Today Martina joins us from noon. She and her brother Simone are the fourth generation to take the helm and have started to make their impact felt. A new winery was finished in 2013 and the vineyards have been farmed organically since 2014. Everything is super traditional but is now done with a level of precision that really shows in these characterful, mineral wines.

Martina will be showing their 2014s. The Camilla is a blend from their holdings in Grinzane Cavour but they have acquired interesting holdings outside the village. The Badarina is from a parcel of vines in Serralunga that belongs to Bruna's mother Clara. It is the most structured of their wines. They also have a parcel in Roddi's most favoured cru, Bricco Ambrogio, which gives a sunnier, more supple wine.

Martina will be here from 12-2:30pm and again from 5-6:30pm /EE

Offered subject to remaining unsold
