Muga

We like Muga a lot. We`ve stocked them for years and in both strands they are excellent and great value. Unusually for the region, their white Rioja stands out as one of the best and best value wines in the portfolio. They are a family owned and run firm - and welcome visitors - doing everything in a most traditional way. You won`t see any stainless steel tanks in this Bodega but you will see an in house cooper repairing old barrels and building new ones.

Although the firm was founded in 1932 bye Aurora Cano and her husband, they only started making wine in the 1960s, when they moved to the winery in Barrio de la Estacion, Haro. In the early 1990s they introduced Torre Muga, perhaps their most illustrious wine and certainly a controversial one at the time. Many feared that the family was abandoning tradition, but there is both ancient and modern here, with plenty to please everyone. (CW 22/07/14)
