Leeuwin Estate

Leeuwin Estate

At a mere thirty-seven years old in terms of ownership - and only in commercial production for thirty-one of those - Leeuwin has an extraordinary track record, with the Art Series Chardonnay appearing twice on the cover of Wine Spectator. Despite this brief history, Leeuwin has spawned a large fan base who display a loyalty we normally associate with producers like Leoville-Barton and Ghislaine Barthod.
What do they find in the wines? There is an almost European elegance, complexity and the ability to age, especially that opulent Art Series Chardonnay. This wine has become the undoubted champion over the decades and is the white wine equivalent of Penfolds Grange or Henschke Hill of Grace. Others have set out to make Australia`s best white wine but none has bested the Art Series.

The secrets include the cool climate and the minimal but intelligent intervention practised in the vineyards. You need a masterclass in parrot distraction? Leeuwin can help. You want to combine windbreaks with legume mulching? Speak to Leeuwin. Their blend of inspiration and common sense has resulted in over thirty years of the best Australia can offer. (CW 09/10/09)
