Christian Moreau

Moreau`s convoluted past has led the firm, first established in 1814, to be owned by a Canadian whisky maker and a Nuits-St-Georges producer. The last 8 or so years have seen rapid changes. A new entity, Domaine Christian Moreau, was established in 2000. In 2001, a 6th generation of Moreau, Fabien, having completed a winemaking degree and honed his skills in New Zealand, took over as head winemaker. 2002 saw the domaine`s 12.5 ha of vineyards finally returned to their rightful owner. Despite their holdings spanning grand and premier crus, through to village and Petit Chablis, the ethos remains the same. Leaf-thinning, green harvesting and severe pruning are used to restrict yields and ensure healthy, ripe grapes, and only organic fertilisers are used. A sorting table, de rigueur these days, adds to the severe selection process, preceded by hand harvesting. The 2006 vintage was marred by excesses of heat, then water, making it problematic, especially for those who farm organically. They started picking a bit later than most but the wines still show wonderful minerality, freshness and remarkable depth and concentration. Allen Meadows is in no doubt about how far the domaine has come. `The quality here is once again so good that I`m tempted to say that Chablis has yet another leading light to add to the usual stars of Raveneau and Dauvissat.` - burghound.com, January 2007
