Chateau Angludet

Chateau Angludet

Already under vine in the seventeenth century, Angludet underwent numerous changes of size and ownership between then and 1961. Peter Sichel bought it then, when but seven hectares were still under vine, most of that having been replanted in 1953 only to be killed by the winter of 1956. Sichel grubbed up most of what was left and has gradually replanted the estate so that 34 hectares are in production with an average age of 27 years. A couple of miles from the estuary, the estate lies on a mix of deep and light gravel. Benjamin Sichel helped to introduce an ecological method of pest control in the Medoc and, although the summer farming is done by hand and concentrates on having all the fruit properly ripe at the same time, harvest is deliberately done by the most modern machines, for flexibility and agility. Together with lowering yields these improvements have led to great consistency and very high quality in recent years with Benjamin leading a team on top form. One of his contributions is planting 10% of the estate to Petit Verdot for greater complexity. Angludet is textbook Margaux, unforced and perfumed and, in 2009, concentrated by the small yield of just 35 hl/ha, it is structured and destined for a spell in the cellar. (CW 19/04/10)
