Alheit Vineyards is the story of Chris and Suzaan Alheit, who met at university in Stellenbosch and travelled the world together. In 2010 they setttled on Hemelrand Farm, Hemel & Aarde, and set about building their vision. They work with vineyards all over the country, including Nuwedam (Swartland, source of Fire by Night), purchased by the Alheits in 2019.
To quote the couple; their aim is to find the voice of the land, not the mark of the winemaker. There is no fining, non-native yeasts, blocking malo, no enzymes etc. They believe this is the best way to express the terroir of the Cape. In the winery they use clay pots, cement eggs, foudres and old oak. These are serious wines of great quality and complexity and are becoming increasingly sought after.
Chris also makes a Syrah with his friend William Fogwell, a new project as of in 2023.
