Uncorked essential updates on the world's fine wines

The Uncorked wine school is a friendly space that offers you an informal entry to understanding more about what is hopefully your favourite drink. We offer a mix of structured courses, tutored and informal tastings in the shop and we often host corporate events either here or at your venue.

Don't forget to keep an eye on the calendar for our full programme of tastings, including our Free Friday tastings that continue through the year up to 5th December. It's also the first place you'll see courses advertised. The current introduction to wine course sold out before we had a chance to email details of it.

However we are delighted to be able to offer you the chance to taste a range of wines from two highly significant regions. One, Piedmont, has for many people only recently appeared in their consciousness and often only means Barolo. Yet there is a plethora of fascinating and brilliant wines available. The other is Burgundy, well established in the drinking habits of our customers and ourselves, but still a complicated part of the world to understand. Of course we number both regions among our favourites and we understand that there is a thirst for knowledge and understanding as much as for the wines.

At the Piedmont evening I want to show some of both the breadth and depth of what this region has to offer. Rich in history and culture and with Turin as its capital, there has in the last seventy years been a complete change in styles, quality and hierarchies of the wines. Not all the mysteries are resolved and not all the vineyards mapped, but it's possible to have a clearer view than ever - subject to fog of course.

At the Burgundy evening, you'll taste a range of wines from our stocks and we will explore this fascinating area. I'll have spent the previous week in the region so I'll have the skinny on the 2013 vintage and unformed impressions of this year too. Though having spent five days sitting in a car, standing in cellars and eating that will be the only skinny on offer. You can expect the theme 'c'est Bourgogne; c'est compliqué' to guide the evening. I'll have heard that a lot over the previous days. We'll taste wine from top to bottom of the region, taking the view that Burgundy stops at Pouilly, so no Beaujolais, before you ask. /CW
