Chasing the sublime: 2015-2020 Marc Sorrel Hermitage Gréal |
Hermitage is the most celebrated of all northern Rhône appellations. The entire hill is only about the size of one large Bordeaux estate, yet it is responsible for some great and seriously long-lived expressions of Syrah. Guillaume Sorrel oversees two and a half hectares of vines here: with 80% of the hill in the hands of just 4 larger producers, Sorrel is in fact one of the few small domaines with vineyards in plum, central sites. Guillaume regularly meets with his friend Jean-Louis Chave so the two can taste each other's wines. Jean-Louis likes to josh Guillaume: 'You're not a better winemaker than me, you just have better terroir'.
Guillaume fully took over from his father Marc in 2018, though he'd been responsible for the vineyards for years. The top Sorrel bottling has always been Gréal, blended from two distinct and distinguished lieux-dits on the granitic western flank of the hill. Most of the vines come from Méal, the higher spot, on thin, limestone-studded soil; below it, complementary Greffieux lies on deeper, more clay-rich soil. The names Greffieux and Méal fuse to make Gréal. As well as Syrah, a small amount of white Marsanne is blended through Gréal, bringing more lift and floral aromatics.
