Lukas van Loggerenberg: 'I hope my kids get to see a vintage like this'

The exceptional 2025 vintage, from one of South Africa's most exciting winemakers

Lukas van Loggerenberg's journey began in 2005 as a harvest intern. In 2007 he received a scholarship to study at Elsenberg Agricultural College (alma mater for luminaries such as Eben Sadie, and Marc Kent of Boekenhoutskloof). He graduated in 2009 and worked a few harvests in South Africa before taking up a position in the US, where he was introduced to the world of fine wine. After a trip through Burgundy, Champagne and (most influentially) the Loire Valley, he returned to South Africa determined to create his own expression of fine wine in his home country.

His first solo vintage was 2016, and (despite a nasty knee injury just before his first harvest) he has gone from strength to strength since. Now happily ensconced in spacious facilities just outside Paarl, Lukas has had an incredible run of vintages, culminating in the exceptional 2025.

The great enemy of quality in South Africa is the pre-harvest heatwave, which accelerates sugar-ripening sharply at the expense of aromas and flavours. Other than a short Christmas heatwave, 2025 was cool, long and slow - winemakers were able to leave the fruit on the vine for longer, as sugars accumulated slowly, picking at the ideal point to maximise the complexity and intensity of flavour without excessive alcohol. This has resulted in a near-perfect vintage, one which, in the words of Eben Sadie, 'will become for a long time the measure of any vintage that follows.' /JH

'Van Loggerenberg has become a top-division winemaker over the last two or three years, joining the elite band of Sadie, Savage et al. — remarkable since his maiden vintage was barely a decade ago...' — Neal Martin, vinous.com
