Dog Point Vineyards: Marlborough Sauvignon with a twist
Since we're unlikely to be spending so many balmy evenings in beer gardens or wine bar terraces over the next few weeks, it seems a sensible idea to ensure you've got a good provision of crisp and zesty wines to enjoy at home. The Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc makes perfect summer drinking; it's full of zingy, uplifting citrus and hints of ripe tropical fruit like guava and pineapple, but there's also a deliciously subtle chalkiness and richness of texture to make this an extremely satisfying and complete wine. This has many of the hallmarks of Marlborough Sauvignon, but retains its distinctiveness and purity thanks to the low-key, minimal intervention approach taken in the winery and the expertise of the original Cloudy Bay team, James Healy and Ivan Sutherland. Dog Point also produce a superior Chardonnay which is full, rich and round but well balanced by flintiness and citrus acidity, as well as a lifted, aromatic Pinot Noir which is brimming with ripe forest fruits.
The wines of Dog Point are unfailingly popular among our customers, and rightly so, since they are supremely drinkable and deliver quality and character year after year. Our last Dog Point dedicated offer was so well-received that we sold out of most of the wines almost immediately. So, we were very pleased to be offered an additional parcel of the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, just in time for the latest instalment in our lockdown unmixed/whole case offers.
Over in New Zealand, the picking season is already over and the 2020 harvest is now safely tucked away in tanks and barrels. The team have had to deal with a completely new set of pressures and constraints and have significantly reduced their workforce in order to maintain physical distancing, yet still brought in all their fruit by hand. 2020 will surely be a vintage to remember, but in the meantime let's enjoy the fruits of labours past and raise a toast to the commitment and dedication of one of our most loved producers. /RRS
