2018: 'not to be missed', 2019: 'enveloping and serene'
'Il Poggione remains one of the absolute top producers of Brunello' - Eric Guido, vinous.com
Il Poggione is one of Brunello's benchmark estates, producing top-class, archetypal Brunello vintage after vintage. Set in the warm south-west of Montalcino, the estate vineyards are spread between 150 and 450 metres of altitude. That's a big advantage when it comes to responding to very diverse vintage conditions, with some grapes that will have ripened fast, and others that will still be very fresh at the end of a long growing season. And while Il Poggione is one of Brunello's largest estates, it somehow manages the high quality levels we would associate with a smaller, artisanal winery. And all this at a very reasonable price point. What's not to like?
The story of Il Poggione is woven through the history of Montalcino. It began 140 years ago, when Florentine landowner Lavinio Franceschi arrived, bought land, and began to farm. In the early 1900s, Il Poggione was among the first estates to bottle and sell Brunello. In the 1960s, it was a founder member of the Consorzio. It remains at the region's cutting edge; its ongoing research programme has provided two of Brunello's most widely-used Sangiovese clones.
2018 and 2019 served Montalcino with two very different vintages, both beautifully expressed at Il Poggione. Where the 2018 is heady and exotic, the 2019 is structured and focussed. The 2018 leads to a warm finish that expresses orange and spice, the 2019 is more cherry, flower and crushed rock. Both are admirable additions to any Brunello lover's cellar. As well as selling both individually, we're giving you a chance to save £30 if you double-dip and pick up a case of each. /NT
