Gems, values, secrets of Bordeaux: a mixed case

24 Jan 2022

6-bottle mixed case for only £75; buy two and we'll throw in free delivery

'Bordeaux is often criticized for charging a king's ransom for its top wines. In reality, it is a vast cradle of quality that can offer unbeatable value, depending on how far you are willing to venture beyond the famous names.' - Neal Martin, vinous.com, January 2021

At the top end, Bordeaux can feel exclusive. First growths are not for every budget. Some chateaux are bought and sold by magnates and insurance and investment companies; property directors and winemakers move around like football team managers. But these famous names are only a tiny fraction of the full story. Bordeaux produces more fine wine than any other region in the world. There are some 6,800 producers here, many of them struggling to make ends meet, and for the discerning consumer, there are some brilliant bargains to be had.

To help you get to grips with the diversity of quality behind the big names, we have put together a mixed case with a bottle each from some of our favourite unsung Bordeaux stars, three from the left bank, three from the right. Not only can we offer the case for just £75, if you double up and buy two, we'll throw in free delivery.

£75 for the 6-bottle case: you save 15%, includes free delivery when you buy two or more

2018 Chapelle d'Alienor: from the Malet-Roquefort family, better known for sought-after Saint-Emilion La Gaffeliere, comes this very refined blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Plum, cherry, confectionery and black tea notes. Complex, smooth, and persistent.

2018 Charme des Confidences: blue fruit and pine notes in this superb Saint-Emilion. Owner Cyril Gouy farms and vinifies the fruit at his tiny property all by himself. Unusually for Saint-Emilion, there is a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon than Merlot, which works well on the gravelly soils here.

2018 La Loubiere: Marie-Micheline Roux remembers her grandfather Aristide telling her, 'If you take care of the land and the vines, they will always repay you by giving you good wine'. It's a motto the family have been following, with great results, for six generations at their property in Entre-Deux-Mers.

2016 L'Hospital: classic Graves character from this overperforming chateau: red cherry and cassis, tobacco leaf and cigar box, with energy, structure and persistence.

2016 Labadie: from limestone and gravel terroir at the north end of the Medoc, this long-standing Cru Bourgeois offers succulent, ripe fruit up front, with the leavening freshness of Cabernet Franc on the finish. Delicious and well balanced.

2011 Serilhan: 'Sérilhan is a Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois Supérieur that has consistently furnished Bordeaux lovers with superb wines': Neal Martin says it all so I don't have to. The 2011 is developing a lovely mature, mellow, tertiary character. /NT
