French Wine of the Year

In a 6-vintage sequence case: Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rangen Clos St-Urbain

The steep, volcanic Rangen vineyard looms over the River Thur and the village of Thann. It is one of Alsace's most exceptional, distinct grand cru sites. The 2.5 hectare Clos St-Urbain is a domaine Zind-Humbrecht monopole inside Rangen. Olivier Humbrecht cultivates three different varieties here (Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer) which we taste every year. It is remarkable that as much as varietal character, the Rangen wines always bear the very strong mark of their vineyard, a complex, struck-match minerality that Olivier himself likes to characterize as 'peaty'.

Olivier has always had a bit of a bee in his bonnet about Pinot Gris. It can make rich wines of deep savoury complexity, in his opinion often among Alsace's greatest, but it tends to get overlooked in favour of other varieties. So it has given him great pleasure that his 2021 Pinot Gris Clos St-Urbain has been named French Wine of the Year on jamessuckling.com.

We typically sell out of the Rangen wines en primeur, but Olivier has very kindly stepped in to liberate some stock. He has raided his domaine's deep, cold cellars to assemble a set of 6-vintage sequence cases. Each case contains one bottle of Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos St-Urbain from each vintage between 2016 and 2021. It is a rare opportunity to get a sense of the passage of the years in one of France's great vineyards. /NT
