There have been Droins working the Chablis scene for a long time: 14 generations over 400 years, in fact. This is a family that knows its terroir. Across premier and grand cru sites, the south-west facing slopes of the Serein Valley are responsible for some of the world's great white wines. These are dry, often steely, sometimes austere and possessed of a defining, chalky minerality that is often characterized as 'oyster shell'.
Benoît Droin took over at his family domaine some twenty years ago and has never sat still since. In the vineyard, he has improved pruning systems and reduced yields. In the winery, he has switched all fermentation to indigenous yeasts, and dialled back on the new oak his father introduced. After extensive experimentation, he moved over to Diam closures for all cuvees, believing these offer a better guarantee of quality and longevity.
His 2022s are classy, high-energy wines. The generosity of a warm year is set against an invigorating freshness; hot days in the vineyards were countered by cold nights. We have put together a very top-end mixed case of Droin 2022s to help you explore this great terroir, and the work of a great winemaker. Sometimes these wines are mineral and floral, sometimes they are lemon and lime and wet stone, sometimes they surprise you with smoke and butter.
