Ascheri Barolo: the exquisite 2016s

Fine Barolos in the classic school

Exquisite, quintessential Nebbiolo. All the aromas of sour cherry, herb and dried flowers which the grape is loved for, and a range of wines that beautifully captures village differences. Ascheri do pretty well for themselves, and more so in the exceptional 2016 Barolo vintage. Not many Barolo wineries boast a cru with their own name on it, but Ascheri have been on the scene for a long time, and have made a corner of La Morra all their own.

Back in 1880, when Ascheri was founded, the town of Bra bustled with Barolo wineries thanks to its train station. These days, Ascheri is the town's sole surviving winery. Matteo Ascheri took over from his father in 1988, and now runs everything alongside his son Giuseppe. Vinification remains slow and traditional.

They always make a classic Barolo, blended from their holdings in La Morra, Serralunga d'Alba and Verduno; the 2016 surprises for its aromatic range and depth. But since 1999, exceptional vintages also see single cru bottlings, and 2016 gets the full set. Tasting these, the striking thing is how clearly each showcases the village style. Pisapola is classic Verduno, supple, elegant and spicy. From Serralunga, Sorano is structured, focused, powerful. And from La Morra, Ascheri cru itself makes a wine that is heady and hedonistic, complex and intense. /NT
