'2025 Poujeaux is fabulous'

Inland from Margaux and St-Julien, the historic town of Moulis is surrounded by vines. Before the Médoc was properly drained and irrigated, this was the heartland of Bordeaux viticulture, but over the last two hundred years the focus has moved nearer the river. But there remain some great (and great value) properties here.

The best section of Moulis is the gravelly Poujeaux plateau, where Château Poujeaux itself has 50 hectares under vine. Poujeaux has its roots in the sixteenth century, was split up by the vicissitudes of history, then reassembled in the 1920s. In 2008, the Cuvelier family took over, and began a dramatic series of improvements. Over the last 20 years they have modernized the winemaking facilities, switched to organic viticulture, begun picking later and reduced yields, leading to riper fruit. Poujeaux has never been better.

Poujeaux is one of two Moulis properties that would stand a fair chance of being listed as classic growths in any hypothetical modern rerun of the 1855 classification, as Jane Anson notes in Inside Bordeaux. The price, for classed growth quality, is a pretty unbeatable £94 for six in bond. It gets even better: we can go down to £90 per case on orders of 4 cases or more.
