One of the original SuperTuscans, Ornellaia has played a pivotal role in establishing Bolgheri among Italy’s premier wine regions. While it has seen a succession of superstar winemakers, over its four-and-a-half decades of existence it has remained remarkably consistent in style. Recent vintages have relied a little more on the cooler vineyard sites and a slightly higher proportion of freshening Cabernet Franc.

2023 brings an Ornellaia that the estate has nicknamed La Vitalità (‘Vitality’) for its sheer verve and energy. 2023 was nothing if not a dynamic, changeable vintage, and as Monica Larner notes on robertparker.com, 2023 Ornellaia ‘captures the vintage with remarkable elegance’. In 2023, a mild winter kick-started an early start to the season. Spring rains replenished water reserves, but also brought the challenge of mildew. Summer was warm, but mitigated by timely rains. The key to the season was cool September evenings, which allowed the development of aromatic complexity while preserving freshness and acidity.

The result is an Ornellaia that scores more highly than any since the great 2016 – and is also the cheapest on release for 5 years. /NT
