2021 Clos des Papes, ‘a small but beautiful vintage’

24 Nov 2022

The master of the mixed vineyard

The soils at Clos des Papes span gravel, clay, sand and limestone. Owner and winemaker Vincent Avril thinks of that as a strength rather than a farming challenge. Different soils demand different grapes, and, he says, 'diversity means complexity in the wine'. Both his red and his white wine are composed of what he calls 'an orchestra of varieties.' To that orchestra, Vincent brings Burgundian training, strict biodynamic practices, and a mastery of tannin management. Small wonder that Clos des Papes is one of the defining properties in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

'Nature reminds us each year that it is she who decides,' says Vincent. 2021 saw a catastrophic April frost kill many early buds on the vine. That ultimately led to a small harvest, but Vincent philosophically reflects it is the quality that matters. 'The first wines we tasted were very fine and elegant with very silky tannins. This is a small but beautiful vintage'.

The 2021 Chateauneuf Rouge offers beautiful aromatics of forest fruits, figs and the classic garrigue herb note characteristic of Mourvedre. The opulent mid-palate is lifted by a refreshing acidity, and the supple tannins conceal serious structure that will give this wine a long cellar life. The Chateauneuf Blanc bursts with notes of blossom and stonefruit; over time, it will develop a rich gunflint character. /NT
