Expressive, traditionalist Barolo from a great vintage, only £25/bottle in bond
Beautifully expressive, traditionalist Barolo from the great 2021 vintage – at an extremely reasonable price point. What’s not to like? Cabutto flies under the radar, but with meticulous winemaking, twenty hectares of fine vineyards and a hundred years of history, this estate deserves to be better known. The approach is very old school, and most of the production is focussed on one Barolo, blended from vineyards in the communes of Barolo, La Morra and Novello.
The Cabutto story goes back to the 1920s, when one Domenico Cabutto bought a farm from the nephew of King Victor Emmanuel II. That farm came with some of the best vineyards in the locality. The farmstead (and now winery) nestles next to La Volta castle, looking steeply down on the town of Barolo.
On mainly blue marl veined with sand, the Cabutto vineyards lend themselves to the elegant and perfumed. That style is highlighted by traditionalist Barolo winemaking, which means very long macerations (28-33 days) and a minimum of 36 months in large old Slavonian casks. The stellar 2021 Barolo vintage has made a Cabutto where the delicate aromatics disguise the textbook tannins which imbue Barolo with its legendary ability to age. With impeccable balance, 2021 Cabutto will age effortlessly (but drinks very nicely right now). And at only £150 for a case in bond, it costs much less than most of the great Barolos it evokes. /NT
