2019 Burgundy: Chambolle, Vosne, Nuits

2 Feb 2021

Felettig, Sigaut, Meo-Camuzet, Chevillon, Gouges, Julien, Millot, Tawse

Chambolle-Musigny is a name to conjure with; many people's ideal of Burgundy is formed by the delicate, lacy style of wines the village is known for. Happily, there are some brilliant producers here who have risen to the front rank in relatively recent years, and whose wines don't entirely disappear on allocation. Felettig has experienced a meteoric rise in its reputation over the last few vintages, and is now among Chambolle's most highly-regarded domaines; over the last decade, Gilbert Felettig has quietly revolutionised viticulture and vinification here. The brilliant reviews that Sigaut has recently been enjoying attest to soaring quality there too, fruit of the years of labour and the transition to organics since Anne and Hervé Sigaut took over back in 1990.

The small commune of Vosne-Romanee is responsible for some aromatically exquisite wines - and some of the world's most expensive. Based in Vosne, Meo-Camuzet enjoys a diverse range of sites up and down the Cote, and has produced a seriously fine set of 2019s; Jean-Nicolas is delighted with the way the wines have become both more refined and more energetic during elevage. He draws a comparison with the 2015s, and their long aging potential.

Nuits-St-Georges has a reputation for producing a darker style of Burgundy, though in fact there is a great diversity of styles here, from the dark and brooding to the lifted and floral. Chevillon is among the many jewels of Nuits, consistently crafting sumptuous wines that reflect the various terroirs and microclimates of the appellation; their 2019s are luscious, ripe and polished. 2019 marks a significant vintage for Gouges; it is the 100th anniversary of their first vintage, in the wake of Henri Gouges' return from the Great War. Gouges has released a one-off premier cru cuvee to celebrate, made from a selection of the best bunches from their various premier cru vineyards. Etienne Julien's family domaine may go back five generations, but that didn't stop him rethinking it from the ground up when he took over. He has the air of a bon viveur, but do not underestimate how hard he works - both in the vineyard and the cellar! His wines are as joyful and hedonistic as the man himself. Tawse is born of the alliance between Burgophile Canadian Pascal Marchand and the highly talented English winemaker Mark Fincham. From the vineyards that belonged to former Domaine Maume they are crafting some seriously good, focussed, expressive wines that recapture the spirit of Maume in its heyday. And at Jean-Marc Millot, generational change is now complete, with Jean-Marc's talented daughter Alix now entirely in charge. Her confidence is infectious, and her 2019s brim with energy and intensity. /NT
