Felettig, Sigaut, Mugnier, Bertheau, Hudelot-Noellat
Depth, charm, complexity, intensely winning perfumes, and a deft touch with the new wood - 2018 brings a beautifully assured set of wines from Gilbert and Christine Felettig, from the relatively fine and delicate to the sometimes quite showy, via the deep, complex and thoughtful. Gilbert and Christine work with a large proportion of old vines which rein in production but bring noticeable extra depth to the wines. This domaine has only been on our radar for a few years, but in that time has soared towards the head of the pack.
Anne and Herve Sigaut also have some excellent and diverse holdings across various premier cru sites, including a substantial proportion of old and very old vines. Farming here is careful, meticulous and follows the lunar calender. Their wines are detailed and exquisite. The goal has always been to let terroir and vintage speak, and make Chambolle that tastes of Chambolle.
Mugnier are also based in Chambolle, though the domaine is perhaps most widely known for their 1er cru monopole in Nuits-St-Georges, Clos de la Marechale. Francois Bertheau is another Chambolle favourite; when we visited last November, he seemed more interested in teasing us and giggling than talking about wine. But his complex, beautiful wines spoke for themselves. At the end of Chambolle, just over the border into Vougeot, you get to Hudelot-Noellat, where the wines are as dark-fruited, silky and fragrant as ever. /NT
