2017 Leeuwin Estate Art Series

Power meets purity down in Margaret River

With its ocean-influenced climate and small-scale production, the Margaret River area of Western Australia is responsible for some of the highest quality and most sought-after wines the country has to offer. Leeuwin Estate has played a key role in forging this reputation. Here, the plentiful sunshine and cool maritime breeze work together to create generous wines with intense, pure fruit and distinctive structure.

Leeuwin is among the founding 'Margs' wineries. In the early 1970s Napa wine legend Robert Mondavi identified a former cattle ranch as the perfect spot for a vineyard. Throughout those early years he continued to act as consultant/mentor to the Horgan family as tricky, low-yielding US clones were planted and the winery got off the ground. Over the decades Leeuwin has acquired and maintained global recognition for producing top quality wines, with the Art Series Chardonnay widely considered the Australian benchmark. The Art Series label designates Leeuwin's 'most opulent and age-worthy' wines, and features artworks from a range of contemporary Aussie artists.

The 2017 Chardonnay is generous, with plenty of powerful, vibrant fruit and an intense bead of acidity to cut through the richness. The 2017 Shiraz is crammed with bramble and mulberry fruit flavours, with a distinct pepperiness, a product of this relatively cool vintage. /RRS
